DTD

Short for Document Type Definition. A DTD states what tags and attributes used to describe the content in SGML, XML or HTML document, where each tag is allowed, and which can be displayed in a tag other tags. For example, the DTD could say that LIST tags can contain ITEM tags, but ITEM tags can not contain LIST tags. In some editors, when the author entered the information, they can place tags only where the DTD allows. This ensures that all documentation is formatted the same way. Applications will use the DTD to properly read the document and display the contents of the document. Changes in the document format can be easily made by modifying the DTD
